Expressions School of Performing Arts – The History

  • Established in 1989 as Discoworld School of Dance based in Market Chambers, Mansfield Market Place. The studio at that time just taught Disco Dancing following the current trends made famous by Saturday Night Fever. The school began with just 10 pupils.
  • After a few years the school became increasingly popular with over 100 students and the introduction in teaching of ballet, tap and jazz.
  • After approximately 5 years the studios became too small for the amount of pupils and a purpose built building was converted on Newgate Lane. The school moved into the premises where it is based today.
  • With the evolvement of dance the school began to teach not only freestyle (Disco) but ballet, tap, jazz, gymnastics and Latin American dancing.
  • Discoworld ran a very successful competitive based freestyle school which trained pupils to become national champions in competitions all over the UK.
  • The school had three successful trips to South Africa taking a part of freestyle dancers over for the South Africa Championships as part of the Great British Team
  • In 2003 the school had a name change to Expressions School of Performing Arts the reason for this was to incorporate three different businesses due to large expansion – Expressions School of Performing Arts the evening based and weekend school which took over from Discoworld School of Dance,  Expressions Academy of Performing Arts – a full time 3 year musical theatre course training students aged 16 plus for full training in the performing arts (Dance, Singing, Acting and Musical Theatre) and also Expressions Casting Agency which represents children and graduates from all over the UK for West End, Tours, TV, Film and Commercial work.
  • Today the school has a staff of over 20 people and teaches all dance subjects ballet, tap, jazz, street dance, latin American, freestyle, gymnastics, rock and roll, show dance and slow dance.
  • The school also has professional staff teaching singing and musical theatre and also a division teaching acting and speech. Enabling the school to teach all aspects of the Performing Arts
  • The Academy also runs a Junior Associate Saturday school for ages 4-16 to experience all round training in the performing arts.
  • The school is a registered centre for I.D.T.A. and U.K.P.T.D. and also registered with A.D.F.P.
